[PS2] KOF: Maximum Impact Regulation A ROM Download
KOF: Maximum Impact Regulation A ROM Description
The King of Fighters (KOF) series took the fighting game world by storm when it launched in the 90s. Now, KOF: Maximum Impact brings the iconic franchise into the 3D era for the first time. This PS2 exclusive retains the quick, combo-driven gameplay that KOF is known for, but with a visual overhaul. However, the transition isn’t without its growing pains.
Visually, Maximum Impact is a mix of impressive and awkward. The character models look great during combat, especially when unleashing flashy special moves. But the cutscenes and intro sequences are stiff and lack expression. The roster collects 30 classic fighters like Kyo and Iori sporting alternate costumes. Unfortunately, many fan favorites are absent. An all-English voice cast replaces the original Japanese actors. For purists, this is disappointing since the new voices are drastically different. At least the pumping soundtrack will satisfy series veterans.
Gameplay-wise, veterans will feel right at home with the fast pace and classic movesets. However, some animations look unnatural in 3D. On the plus side, new 3D mechanics like side-stepping and parries add depth. The streamlined combo system makes chaining attacks simpler than ever, almost too simple in fact. Button-mashing provides cheap rewards, and some punishing infinites exist.
Beyond the basics, Maximum Impact comes up short. The story mode’s structure is bizarre and focuses on an unknown character. The mission mode provides fun challenges, but the customization is silly. “Rigging models” lead to questionable costume choices for characters. On top of this, the roster feels incomplete without many iconic fighters.
Overall, KOF: Maximum Impact just barely succeeds at bringing the 2D fighting sensation into 3D. It retains the general spirit of KOF but doesn’t fully realize the series’ potential in 3D. The gameplay foundation is enjoyable for casual fans. But flaws like the new voice cast, lacking features, and missing characters make it hard to wholeheartedly recommend to devoted KOF veterans.
As a PS2 exclusive, KOF fans will want to check out Maximum Impact despite its missteps. It brings back fast-paced 3D fighting action. Just don’t expect it to top classics like KOF ’98.
