Atlus brought a new twist to the acclaimed Megami Tensei series in 2006 with Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army. This PlayStation 2 action RPG broke from tradition, featuring real-time combat in a historical setting. Players took the role of Raidou Kuzunoha, a summoner investigator in 1930s Japan. Blending dark fantasy with noir detective work, it stood out in the franchise.
In Taishō era Tokyo, Raidou works at the Narumi Detective Agency. When a distraught schoolgirl named Kaya Daidōji requests the detectives kill her, Raidou’s case begins. Red soldiers kidnap Kaya before he learns more. As demon outbreaks spread across Tokyo, Raidou searches for answers.
Devil Summoner’s combat is a shift for Megami Tensei. Raidou wields swords and guns in real-time battles. Players also collect demons to summon as allies. While innovative, some criticized this system as clunky. Outside fights, Raidou explores Tokyo and interacts with figures like Rasputin. An engrossing narrative unfolds across varied locations.
Though considered too short by some, Devil Summoner earned praise for its novel setting and fusion of genres. A sequel released in 2008 built on its foundations. And in 2014, Atlus ported the game to PS3 digitally.
Fans of occult noir should dive into Raidou’s debut adventure. Despite imperfect combat, its distinct style and premise impress.
