The game is set on the continent of Berwick, which is divided into several nations. The player is in charge of a group of mercenaries who are hired by one of the countries to protect them from an attack by Zeteginna, a neighboring country. The game is played by moving characters around on a grid-based map and fighting against enemy units with swords, bows, and magic. The player can also recruit new characters, upgrade their equipment, and choose which missions to take on.
When it came out, TearRing Saga: Berwick Saga got mostly good reviews, with critics praising its challenging gameplay and strong story. It has developed a dedicated fan base and is considered a tactical role-playing game genre classic.
