Developed by Insomniac Games and released by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3 in 2013, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus is also known as Ratchet & Clank: Nexus in PAL territories. The game is the eighth major entry in the Ratchet & Clank series and the fourth and final installment in the Future saga, therefore it features the usual Ratchet & Clank characteristics like exotic and unusual locales and over-the-top gadgets.

Plot

The story continues where A Crack in Time left off, with Ratchet and Clank in the present day. Together with Cronk and Zephyr, they’re tasked with transporting felon Vendra Prog to a faraway jail. Ratchet and Clank begin investigating the Prog siblings after Vendra’s twin brother Neftin assaults the ship and rescues her. They learn that the Progs have been investigating the “Netherverse,” a parallel universe where demons known as the Nethers reside. As the tale progresses, Ratchet and Clank engage in an epic struggle against Mr. Eye, leader of the Nethers, to defeat him and the Progs.

Gameplay

Into the Nexus’s gameplay is similar to previous entries in the series, although it places more emphasis on gravity. The game includes new and returning weaponry and gadgets like the Fusion Grenade and The Warmonger. The Winterizer, the OmniBlaster, and the Nightmare Box are all brand-new weaponry presented here. Gold Bolts, Cheats, and Skill Points are all back as well. Gravity is an important mechanic in the game that is used with devices like The Repulsor to get to otherwise inaccessible locations. Clank takes part in challenging puzzle-solving in 2D areas dubbed The Netherverses.

Zephyr, Cronk, Talwyn, Captain Qwark, and The Plumber are all back, and the villainous Thugs-4-Less have reappeared. In addition to the three difficulties (Cadet, Hero, and Legend), the game also includes the Intergalactic Arena (later renamed Destructapalooza) and Raritanium for upgrading weapons. There’s also a “Challenge Mode” to try out.

Review

The game was well regarded upon its release, albeit not quite as well as the other entries in the Future series. Reviews were generally positive, singling out the game’s visuals, playability, controls, and sense of comedy, but criticizing its plot and short length. In April 2016, a remake of the original game in the series was released on the PlayStation 4, and in June 2021, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a legitimate sequel, was released for the PlayStation 5.
