Mario Party ROM Description
Ah, the sweet memories of Mario Party! The first game in Nintendo’s beloved franchise set the tone for hours of friendly competition and childish giggles amongst friends. On February 8, 1999, the American audience was gifted with the chance to play this gem of a game. The Japanese, however, got their hands on it a little earlier, on December 14, 1998. Europe and Australia, meanwhile, were able to join the party on March 9, 1999. Mario Party was the beginning of a legacy developed by the talented minds at Hudson Soft and published by the mighty Nintendo. Despite some criticism for its lack of a thrilling single-player mode, the multiplayer aspect was highly praised and continues to be a hit. With a 77% average rating on Game Rankings and a 79% average rating on Metacritic, it’s no wonder Mario Party continues to be a staple in gaming history.
Plot
Amidst bickering and banter, a band of Nintendo favorites – Mario, Luigi, the radiant Princess Peach, the playful Yoshi, the mischievous Wario, and the mighty Donkey Kong – find themselves in the heated debate over who reigns supreme. Each boast of their unique strengths, determined to prove their superiority. But as tensions rise, the wise Toad intervenes with a proposal – a pilgrimage to the mystical Mushroom Village where the truth of who truly reigns as the best will be revealed through thrilling adventures. And so, the journey begins, each with its own goal in mind, with the same determination to come out as the ultimate champion.
Gameplay
In Mario Party, the quest to become the ultimate champion begins on sprawling game boards dotted with spaces. Here, players (solo or in a group) race to gather the most coveted prize – shining stars. To secure one, 20 coins must be exchanged, or, for the daring, a mischievous Boo can be summoned to swipe a rival’s star for a price of 50 coins. With these mechanics firmly in place, the Mario Party franchise was off to a rollicking start, inviting players to test their skills and cunning in pursuing ultimate glory.
Coins are the currency of victory. Collect them by landing on blessed blue spaces or crushing the competition in mini-games. Spend your hoard wisely, for stars can only be claimed with a hefty coin purse. But beware, a roll of the dice could send you spiraling onto a treacherous red space, a visit from the infamous Bowser, or a defeat in a mini-game that may leave you penniless.
At the journey’s end, three bonus stars are up for grabs. The wealthiest player, the mini-game coin champion, and the lucky soul who landed on the most question mark spaces will each receive one. If the stars are tied, the wealthiest player takes the prize.
Enjoy mini-games
Mini-games in Mario Party truly set the game apart from the rest. With 56 mini-games, players are treated to a cornucopia of fun and exciting challenges. The games are divided into four different types: a free-for-all for all players, two vs. two, where teammates join forces against another duo, one vs. three, where a single player faces a trio; and solo mini-games that occur when players land on a designated space and test their skills with the chance to gain or lose coins.
One of the mini-games involved players frantically spinning the analog stick as fast as they could. As players discovered, the most effective strategy was to place their hand flat on the bar and spin it. This led to an unfortunate side effect – the analog stick cut into players’ skin, causing painful blisters. In response to this, Nintendo, wary of potential lawsuits, began offering free latex gloves to anyone affected. Later games in the series replaced this action with rapid button tapping, avoiding further skin injuries.
