Play the strange shooter game Clay Quest: Shoot ‘Em Up Action in Platypus and blast through stages designed with clay. This PSP game adds a bit of arts and crafts appeal to an otherwise average side-scrolling shooter, despite its gimmick.
You command spacecraft amid an assault of alien foes in Clay Quest. The side-scrolling shooting action is decent enough to kill time even though it is predictable. Your goal in every level is to avoid enemy waves and fill the screen with bullet patterns. To increase your chances, gather power-ups like as lasers, rockets, and shields that are dropped by unique foes.
Platypus’s artistic style of claymation serves as the hook here. Pixel art sprites were created by hand molding ships, buildings, and effects out of clay. It’s an interesting craft project made interactive. Sadly, the PSP’s narrow screen makes it difficult to enjoy the smaller sprites without closely examining each pixel.
Lazy level design contributes to the visual problems by creating constant repetition. Levels just repeat in chunks with little change. Enemy patterns become painfully recognizable in successive phases. Furthermore, any sense of development is destroyed by barren backdrops that cycle continuously. These problems take away from the clay graphics’ fleeting freshness.
The shooter idea of Clay Quest isn’t compelling enough because of the repetitive opponent waves, boring settings, and little power-ups. The adorable clay graphics turn out to be little more than a passing trick that can’t get beyond the monotonous stages and fighting. This is one clay pigeon that is better kept on the shelf because of a lack of imagination or diversity.
You should avoid Clay Quest’s shallow art project shooter if you value content above style. But those who like artistic curiosity could find it to be a quick, craft-filled diversion. But don’t count on Platypus traveling very far with his clay trick.
