Playing as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael or Michelangelo, you’ll bound across New York City rooftops, flagpoles and girders in rhythmic fashion. Timing jumps between points builds flow and momentum, rewarding skilled fingers with speed boosts. While this free-running is fluid and fun, the narrow focus distracts from fully exploring and finding collectibles.
These platforming segments comprise most of the gameplay, with brawls intermittent. Unfortunately, combat falls flat compared to the platforming. Battling solo or cooperatively against Shredder’s cronies boils down to repetitive button mashing, lacking depth or challenge. Even bosses can be bested on the first try.
The short campaign provides some replayability if aiming for complete T, M, N, T token collection or faster times. Two-player racing attempts to add longevity, but unbalanced mechanics make competition more frustrating than fun. Visually, the 3D engine impresses on PSP with smooth animation and detailed models, though slower gameplay makes camera issues worse.
TMNT tries ambitious concepts that ultimately stumble on execution. Still, it’s an admirable effort to deliver an original PSP experience. For turtle fans eager to put their shell-kicking skills to the test, it offers short-lived arcade thrills perfect for on-the-go play. Even with flaws, no other handheld TMNT title compares.
