WWII – Battle Over the Pacific ROM Description

This retro WWII air combat game nails the basics but lacks depth and excitement. With a choice between only two planes, a fighter for dogfighting or a bomber for ground targets, tactical options are extremely limited. Missions boil down to repetitive checklists of destroying nearly identical ships or engaging indistinct enemy fighters. There’s no nuance to the controls either – just hold fire while turning left and right to down foes.

Enemies show no intelligence, making kills feel like tedious chores rather than thrilling aerial duels. Taking out installations with non-bombing planes is especially dull, requiring multiple tedious strafing passes. While functional, nothing feels immersive or compelling.

Visually the game looks sharp but is sparse, with little scenery besides your plane and targets. Audio checks the requisite boxes without flair. The bare bones WWII narrative provides context but no cinematic flair. Overall the game competently delivers simplistic retro gameplay without anything to wow or surprise players.

Some may enjoy the no frills classic vibe. But with the lack of variety, excitement, and depth, the experience quickly grows repetitive. Unless you have a strong nostalgia for the era, it’s hard to recommend over the many cheaper and more engaging PSP titles available. This is a budget title in every sense – functional yet utterly forgettable. Like an inexpensive toilet, it works fine but offers no style or enjoyment beyond the basics.
