Return to the dark in Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, a 2012 spinoff to Remedy’s psychological horror hit. This downloadable follow-up brings more intense combat and reality-bending fiction to the Arizona town of Night Springs. While repetitive, Alan’s battle against his evil doppelgänger Mr. Scratch remains a creepy, engaging experience.
Set two years after Alan Wake, this arcadesque romp sees Alan trapped in an episode of The Twilight Zone-esque show Night Springs. His evil double Mr. Scratch, a creation of the Dark Presence, is determined to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Alan must pursue Scratch across the same three maps multiple times to piece together a way to erase him from existence.
The signature combat shines bright. Focusing your flashlight to burn shadows from murderous “Taken” before finishing them with guns is still engaging. Dodge, shoot, and deploy light-based weapons like flares; the loop is smooth. Fan-favorite elements like Barry Wheeler and Anderson Brothers cameos also return. The atmosphere oozes Stephen King and Rod Serling influences.
However, repeating content wears it thin. You battle similar enemies across familiar locales three times over, diminishing the scares and excitement. The story also suffers, drip-fed through collectible manuscript pages instead of direct storytelling. While Alan Wake’s combat and style still compel, the repetition hobbles the experience.
Bright spots like Arcade mode add replayability, however. Facing endless waves of the Taken is taut fun, and you’re motivated to keep improving your score. The shooting mechanics remain satisfying. Overall, American Nightmare makes the most of Alan Wake’s world despite reusing maps and enemies.
