For retro gaming fans, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is a must-play Xbox 360 title that can be emulated for modern systems. As the sequel to Assassin’s Creed II, this 2010 release from Ubisoft Montreal continues the saga of Ezio Auditore in Renaissance Italy. With expanded gameplay and the series’ first multiplayer mode, Brotherhood offers plenty for franchise devotees.
Set in Rome circa 1500, the story follows Ezio’s efforts to defeat the Borgia family and rebuild the Assassin Brotherhood. Players can freely explore the city, renovating shops and recruiting assassins to take down Borgia influence. Exhilarating combat allows dual-wielding weapons and chaining instant kills. Other enhancements include Leonardo da Vinci’s gadgets like a parachute and flying machine.
While the core gameplay remains similar to AC II, new elements provide variety. Ezio can recruit citizens as assassin followers that can be called upon in battle. The crossbow makes long-range kills easy. And horses are now readily available for combat and traversal. The most novel addition is multiplayer, with modes like Wanted that cast you as Templar agents.
Despite these changes, the Brotherhood feels overly familiar at times. Missions like tailing targets can still frustrate. Recruited assassins also make the game less challenging by being overpowered allies. The crossbow likewise reduces the need for stealth. So the series’ trademark free running, combat, and exploration is as refined as ever, but feels repetitive for fans of the last game.
For those who haven’t played the previous entry, however, Brotherhood remains a content-rich and rewarding experience. The setting of Rome is brilliantly realized and brimming with history. Using assassin followers to liberate the city creates a great power fantasy. And the multiplayer provides a uniquely tense competitive experience.
So while not as much of a leap forward as AC II, Brotherhood is still an essential Xbox 360 title for devotees of Ezio and the Creed.
