Medal of Honor: Warfighter is the forgettable follow-up to the series’ mildly received 2010 reboot. This first-person shooter ditches innovation in favor of rehashing the same overdone military shooter formula seen yearly across the genre.
Featuring a muddled plot across generic Middle East missions, the story mode fails to impress. You primarily control two operators from elite special forces units as they partake in familiar scenarios – sniping, vehicle segments, stealth sequences – that feel copied directly from Call of Duty and Battlefield. Despite attempts at emotion with a cliché wife and daughter subplot, the game lacks any heart due to awful writing and unsettling character models.
Multiplayer fares better but still sticks to convention. You can join special forces units from around the world and select soldier classes with unique abilities. However, bland maps and familiar modes like team deathmatch demonstrate a lack of creativity. The Frostbite engine provides excellent visuals and destruction, but tight gameplay with minimal innovation makes multiplayer feel like more of the same military shooter tropes fans are burnt out on.
Ultimately, Warfighter brings nothing new to the table. It comes across as less of an inspired sequel and more of an obligatory annual release to fill a checklist of expected features. The single-player campaign is so formulaic and devoid of imagination that it feels like a clip show of previous games. And multiplayer does little to shake up the vanilla template established across the genre.
With its silly over-the-top name and lack of excitement, Warfighter encapsulates the staleness of military shooters in the early 2010s. It simply mimics what’s been done better before. Fans were left wanting something fresh, not more of the same. While some moments show glimmers of promise, Warfighter remains one more drop in the sea of samey military shooters that flooded the market and wore out their welcome.
