This 2D action-platformer lets you play as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo across various levels based on the Nickelodeon TMNT series. While it doesn’t reinvent the genre, fans of the show will enjoy this competent, if somewhat generic, recreation of the turtles’ adventures.
The story follows the turtles as they try to stop enemies like the Kraang and Foot Clan from getting their hands on a dangerous mutagen ooze weapon. Along the way, you’ll unlock new abilities that open up more areas to explore Metroidvania-style. Throwing stars, dash attacks, double jumps, and more become available as you progress. Combat stays fresh with varied foes and puzzle-like encounters to overcome.
Each level also contains loads of backtracking across New York City and the sewers, which can get tedious. And the lack of checkpoints coupled with tough enemies means you’ll retread areas constantly after dying. Still, defeating enemies and traversing terrain feels good with the responsive, well-tuned controls.
While the gameplay shines at times, the presentation disappoints. The TMNT characters lack personality and mostly appear briefly to advance the barebones plot. And the generic art style fails to wow. This title simply lacks the charm expected from a Turtles game.
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze will satisfy platformer fans, but may leave Turtles devotees wanting.
