The Crew offers players a massive virtual playground to explore in the form of a meticulously recreated United States that can be traversed from coast to coast. All major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Miami and more are shrunken down but faithfully detailed representations, connected by vast sweeping landscapes ranging from dense forests to sweeping deserts. While the visuals may not be the most advanced, the sheer scale of the map provides a truly unprecedented sense of freedom on the open road.
One can spend hours simply roaming the country, stopping off in cities to grab new rides or hammer out high speed laps around recreations of famous tracks like Laguna Seca. The map is dotted with ‘skills’ challenges that task players with slalom courses, drifting tests and more. Completing these not only improves one’s driving skills but also provides bragging rights by posting scores to online leaderboards.
The true magic of The Crew however lies in its seamless blending of single player and online play. The campaign follows the story of Alex Taylor as he rises through the ranks of a national car club. Missions vary from standard races to more unique objectives like chauffeuring an AI partner or chasing down fugitives. These can be tackled solo or with up to three online allies through drop-in cooperative play. The always-on connectivity further enhances the vehicular playground, with the ability to challenge friends’ ghost data or form four person crews.
One highlight mission sees Alex infiltrating the notorious 5-10s gang in Miami. Players must face off against the notorious leader Shiv and his lieutenants across the sunny streets. Fans of classic open world racing games will find much to love in The Crew’s big American sandbox.
