Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 brings tactical shooting action to Xbox 360, PS3, Windows and PSP. This sequel to the original Advanced Warfighter sends players back to the Mexico-US border to stop a rebel uprising. With a wide range of environments and CrossCom 2.0 squad command upgrades, GRAW 2 offers an immersive combat experience.
On consoles and Windows, the core gameplay remains similar to the first title. Players take the role of Captain Scott Mitchell, leading squads and utilizing military weaponry to overcome intelligent enemies. New features like Eternal Eyes give players more control over directing friendly units. The squad A.I. has also improved, actively using cover and communicating. The Windows version differs with tweaked gameplay for PC gamers.
For PSP, developer High Voltage Software aimed to fit GRAW 2 between the original and sequel. Alone behind enemy lines in Columbia, Mitchell must follow weapons from Mexico City to their new destination. Even with 22 missions, this portable take is barely GRAW. Instead of a scaled down version, the PSP title is almost a whole new game.
Lone wolf scenarios are common, with no squad control. Somehow health regenerates without med kits, reducing difficulty. Easy ammo refills enable sticking to a couple favorite guns. Worst is the incompetent enemy AI. Soldiers stand motionless under fire, with inane dialogue on repeat. Multiplayer via Ad Hoc saves the experience somewhat, but lacks infrastructure and multiplayer modes.
Visually underwhelming without cinematics, some graphical glitches occur like warping enemies. The soundtrack also disappoints. Mitchell and CrossCom voices are decent, but enemy lines grate quickly.
Overall, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 on consoles and Windows lives up to the franchise legacy. However the PSP version fails to deliver the same engaging tactical shooting. This portable spin-off opts for simplistic run-and-gun gameplay over the console titles’ complex squad tactics. Hardcore fans should steer clear and stick to the Xbox 360, PS3 or Windows editions for the true GRAW experience.
