Virtua Tennis 2009 includes several notable international tennis players, such as Roger Federer, Boris Becker, and Maria Sharapova. These players are available for the player to compete against or play with on the World Tour, considered the most essential part of the game. When creating their character, the player starts from scratch and competes to work up the global ranking list to the number one spot.
The gameplay of Virtua Tennis 2009 is similar to that of its predecessor, Virtua Tennis 3, in that it is not an intense representation of the sport and only requires three buttons to make all available shots. There is still a need for additional time to be devoted to the character’s development through various types of minigames, as well as practice matches, particular training sessions at the Tennis Academy, and so on. These include “Pirate Wars,” in which the player must hit and sink moving pirate ships, and “Shopping Dash,” in which the player must collect goods on the tennis floor while dodging balls hurled at him. Both of these games have the player hitting and sinking moving pirate ships. In addition to the standard singles and doubles matches, you and your pals can compete in these minigames against one another.
The player can only perform one weekly action in the World Tour mode. For example, he can only participate in a tournament or one of the minigames; he cannot do both simultaneously.
