Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition ROM Description
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is a remake of the original 2008 game but with additional new content. The main characters Nero and Dante return, this time along with the mysterious Virgil, Dante’s brother, and two beautiful demon huntresses, Lady and Trish.
The game remains faithful to the original, so if you’ve played it before, you’ll easily get into it again. Capcom says there are some minor gameplay tweaks, but they are negligible in reality. What you get is better graphics, a steady 60 FPS frame rate even on consoles, three new characters, and new modes plus unlockables.
The three new characters, Lady, Trish, and Virgil, have distinct play styles. Lady uses heavy guns to rack up points; Trish focuses on charged attacks and dagger combos; and Virgil demands higher skills. You can choose characters and are not locked into a fixed campaign.
Regarding gameplay, Devil May Cry 4 blends multiple styles that give players mixed emotions. Weaknesses from 2008 still remain, as Capcom did not address them. You will spend a lot of time fighting excellently, creating custom combos to stylishly rack up points. You also destroy the environment to collect orbs for items like health boosts, attack boosts, etc. At the end of each mission, you are scored based on collected orbs, completion time, and style points, so look around and destroy everything destructible.
Apart from fighting, there are also poorly-suited navigation puzzles. They frequently appear and are obtuse, so if you don’t notice clues, you can get lost. This breaks the excellent flow of combat and slows the game unnecessarily.
Visually, there is no difference between PCs and consoles, so everything is crisp and smooth with steady framerates regardless of enemy numbers. The locations and boss battles are varied and visually impressive. However, some low-resolution textures show the game’s age. This is not a remake, but a re-release.
The audio is high quality, providing some contextual chatter from characters. The story is told through many skippable cutscenes. In-game music fits or does not, depending on taste, when it plays during fights.
Players will be pleased with the abundant content here. There are 20 main missions and many side missions, multiple game modes with increasing difficulty, a Bloody Palace survival mode, many unlockable costumes, and stage record options. Additionally, there is more unlockable content to discover, like a cutscene gallery, a character library, concept art, and more useful stuff.
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is another success in Capcom’s series of re-releases, thanks to plentiful content and differentiation between characters. There is a lot to do, so repeated playthroughs to fully enjoy it are warranted. The first playthrough is a learning process before you can demonstrate style. There is no difference between platforms, so this is worth the money regardless of platform.
