Dragon Ball Z Tag Team Brings PSP’s Known Fighting to Life
For some portable tag team action, Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team packs the powerful anime combatants onto the PSP. Although this is the first Budokai Tenkaichi installment for portable devices, the tournament feels more like the same due to reused material.
The main 3D flying fight is still quite intense. Showstopping ki blasts and a torrent of melee assaults are unleashed as you zip around stages. Anyone can start handing out supers and combinations right away thanks to the easy controls. However, skill and strategy are missing due to the rapid speed.
Two-on-two team combat is the primary addition. Organize a buddy or AI partner to launch many assault chains at once. This adds some touch to the chaos of button bashing. However, a tag mode alone won’t enough for the outdated combat engine.
The vast cast of more than 70 characters is striking at first, but then you discover how similar they all play. And story mode recycles stale anime narratives once more. The speed and writing are unimpressive.
Dragon Ball Z is visually stunning, with fluid animation and eye-catching effects. However, the fighting is hampered by boring settings and an unsteady camera. Combat’s irritating noises also get old fast.
