Persona 5 Royal ROM Description
Persona 5 Royal is the astonishing definitive version of one of the finest role-playing games ever made, featuring dungeon-style turn-based combat and an interactive manga wrapped in a highly stylized anime action adventure story. That it takes place in Japan or is made by Japanese is merely a predisposed label used to diminish its quality and purpose, and to alienate the genre from the Western audience – an audience which in and of itself is highly influential on the genre and the Japanese game industry altogether.
Likewise, Japanese culture is felt ubiquitously here at home and abroad, so ignoring the designation “JRPG” or even just plainly “RPG”, Persona 5 is simply one of the greatest PlayStation 4 games ever made.
Story and Characters
In Persona 5 Royal you command a band of Japanese teenagers that are basically superheroes who in turn each control their own personas – Pokemon-style monsters – to aid them in combat. Each one is personalized to their inner desires and machinations. You play primarily as Joker, a misunderstood youth the society confuses for a troublemaker and brandished as a criminal, who is also one of the most well dressed protagonists you’ll see in a video game.
He’s almost completely silent and at times you wonder how such a quiet character could be so cool – maybe that’s because as the leader of the group of Phantom Thieves his actions speak louder than words. The Phantom Thieves is a vigilante group of sorts that rebels against corrupt adults that suffer from distorted cognitions. Their goal is to set the villain straight and avenge the fallen, to set an example and prove their own individual worth. For Joker, as with all great protagonists, the game asks you to fill his shoes.
You also fill the shoes of a great ensemble of characters, each with a colorful personality and each specializing in their own patented persona. All united under a common goal under uncommon circumstance, the characters’ destinies are slated to be intertwined. You come to really identify with each player as one of your gang. Each member operates under an assumed identity using a code name that reflects an aspect of their self-image.
Interestingly, when transforming rather than taking off the mask that shields their facade they put one on as a symbol of their inner desires and machinations. Well sometimes they literally rip off part of their face in order to birth their new one! Each character’s persona is distinct and while some abilities are universally shared and can be learned, each new persona feels tailor-made showcasing some of the finest turn-based combat ever done.
Gameplay
Every fight in Persona 5 feels unique and requires real strategy and thinking in the approach of how to expose the enemies’ weaknesses and take full advantage of your party’s turn. The sheer number of combinations possible through party member management allows for nuance in every single fight and enough variety for several playthroughs. Combat is about creating synergy with your party and every battle permutation is strategic. There is no necessarily wrong choice or best choice, only whatever choice is best for you.
Personas can be captured or created, strengthened and sacrificed, or time stamped and registered to be traded in or bought back at a later time. You can truly catch them all as well as share traits from old personas to awaken newer, stronger ones. Individual personas don’t merely have different cosmetic appearances, often containing special learned abilities that can only be acquired from that particular persona.
Many of their designs are as thoughtful and cute as Pokemon, though most are more mature except for the green penis guy. Overall this game features some of the most creative monster/enemy design in a turn-based dungeon game, or in any type of game period. Apart from minor annoyances the characters really do feel like your friends, your partners in crime. Their character and costume designs and get ups are each chic and sexy, especially the many lady characters, traditional and typical of Japanese anime, and there are no complaints here.
As far as the role-playing mechanics are concerned you may interact with the world in many different ways, from completing menial tasks like reading a book to study for exams, getting part-time jobs to earn in-game currency, hitting balls at the batting cages, or doing inappropriate things with your teacher. You can also fight green penises. And in between you’re going to be pressing X a lot but you’ll always be anticipating what’s to come next.
Though many of the world activities are tedious in nature almost everything you do directly correlates to making you or your allies more powerful for future combat or strengthening your bond with your allies for the same purpose. Each confidante offers unique traits that aid in combat as the personas are categorized and designated to confidants – ranking them up brings you don’t need to summon stronger Arcana or versions of that particular strain of persona, making the task of socializing with the NPCs actually rewarding and heaping praise on this game.
